Comedy Series, Part 5: A New Beginning
I don’t even know why I bother getting to school on time anymore. It usually takes 20 minutes to get from the New Yorker to the Academy on foot, with the stop lights… and I got extremely stressed out today, leaving at 1:41 (meaning, in theory, I should be just late). I speed-walked mile, and made it there in time to check the announcement board (to see what room we’re in) and head up to the rehearsal room. Of course, as I should have expected, Pam wasn’t there yet.
Wonderful.
But, I did get to B.S. with Christy, Kyle, Kaitlyn, and R.J. before we got started. Rehearsal was pretty good today, but not being memorized and off-book is really a handicap to my performance. I can’t quite figure out why I don’t have that scene memorized as of yet. I mean, it’s really not all that much, and I have the latin parts in the first scene memorized. Oh, well, I guess it’s something I’ll work at tonight.
Hound rehearsal was, as always, absolutely wonderful. The card game in the first scene works really well now, with one of my first new comedic bits worked out. I love when something that the author has written comes together as he intended it, but I think I love the actions that are created in rehearsal by the actors and the director even more. Today, we added some of the latter. I’ve now got a fun bit where, as a man pretending to be a cripple, I try to stand up before realizing I can’t move my legs. There’s a second bit that’s kind of hard to describe, where Joel and I have somewhat of a fight while laughing.
It’s great to blog about things that are strictly visual, isn’t it? I’m sure it makes an entertaining read.
We actually started blocking the show from the beginning, and we got through to about my entrance. It’s disappointing that we were starting to really build up steam just as 6:00 hit. Hopefully, the momentum will carry over to tomorrow.
