I pray that I haven’t written about this yet… because, seriously, two entries about this topic are far too many.

I’ll admit that I was a little sad when I heard that Little Women: The Musical was closing on Broadway. Not that the show was amazing, or anything — as a matter of fact, the show itself was far from it. The storyline (which has been testing well for generations now) was far from anything that I felt needed to be expressed through the power of song and dance, the songs in question were ultimately forgettable after they were over, the characters were (in some cases) poorly developed, and I really wasn’t all-too-familiar with Maureen McGovern’s work (so the novelty of seeing her on stage wasn’t too impressive). On the other hand, Sutton Foster was absolutely amazing. In fact, after seeing the show, I went with Stacey to the back door of the Virginia Theater to have her sign my Playbill — she’s still the only Broadway performer I’ve had do that (although I do regret not doing so for Spamalot).

Anyway, the inspiration for this entry came in the form of a compact disc. Stacey purchased the Little Women cast recording the other day, and I haven’t been able to put the damn thing away. The score for this show is extremely unique, in that (during its run) it was the only musical on the Great White Way to not have a synthesizer as an instrument in its orchestra — straight-up old school. Although the music will not appeal to everyone, I really enjoy some of the tracks on here. Sutton’s performance in “Astonishing” is simply that, “Some Things Are Meant To Be” has some of the most beautiful vocal harmonies I’ve ever heard, and “Five for All” is just plain fun. Of course, I’ve seen the show, so I know what’s going on (which always changes my opinions on cast albums)… but I recommend it to anyone who enjoys musical theatre writing.

In other words, if you’re normal, you may not enjoy it as much as us theatre geeks — but, you probably already knew that.

Thus ends this ultimately pointless entry.
